{"id":2579,"date":"2017-10-06T15:34:56","date_gmt":"2017-10-06T15:34:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/flyfiesch.co.nf\/?page_id=2579"},"modified":"2024-10-19T15:52:40","modified_gmt":"2024-10-19T15:52:40","slug":"overview","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/?page_id=2579","title":{"rendered":"LZ Overview"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In general, XC routes from Fiesch are well endowed with recognised landing fields, without stretches of unlandable terrain.\u00a0 It\u2019s only in a few areas \u2013 e.g. around the Furka pass and in the Saas valley \u2013 where finding a good place to land can be tricky.\u00a0 Swiss clubs are keen for pilots to use negotiated landing fields, which can generally be identified from the air by their windsocks, but if you have to land elsewhere you are unlikely to upset anyone, provided that you avoid fields containing livestock or long grass, and are not interfering with anyone else, e.g. the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/?page_id=117\">sailplane runway at M\u00fcnster<\/a>.\u00a0 Especially if you are on your own or not in an official LZ, you should not leave your wing open, but immediately bunch it up and move to the side of the field to pack up, to make it obvious from above that all is well and you do not need help.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I have put together a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/FlyfieschLZs-2020.txt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">waypoint file of landing fields<\/a>.\u00a0 I find it very useful to have these stored in my Flymaster, as I can easily set one as my destination whilst in flight, then the required glide angle to reach it is displayed.\u00a0 In the highly unlikely event that your IT skills are even more rudimentary than mine, here are step by step instructions as to how they can be uploaded to your flight instrument:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>\u00a0Save the page as a text file (or copy and paste the text into a Notepad document).<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0In GpsDump, under &#8220;File&#8221;, click &#8220;Open wpts&#8221; and browse for the file (having chosen &#8220;All files (*.*)&#8221; from the dropdown menu).<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Highlight all the waypoint IDs (in the left-hand column) or use Ctrl-A.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Under &#8220;Write wpts&#8221;, choose &#8220;Send to ********&#8221; (the name of your instrument).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The IDs in the form &#8220;L12345&#8221; are those used in existing waypoint files which I found on Swiss competition websites, and any which I have created myself are in the form &#8220;LR1234&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Wherever you land, there are nearly always valley breezes to be reckoned with.\u00a0 This diagram shows the expected flows without the influence of any general meteo winds:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2580 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Alpinepump3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"877\" height=\"593\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Alpinepump3.jpg 877w, https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Alpinepump3-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Alpinepump3-768x519.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Alpinepump3-500x338.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 877px) 100vw, 877px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The valley breeze in the main <span class=\"st\">Rh\u00f4ne valley is almost always from the west, and pretty strong in mid-afternoon, with gusts often exceeding paraglider trim speed, so it&#8217;s generally considered that landing there at that time is a bad idea.\u00a0 However, if it can&#8217;t be avoided, there are plenty of large flat fields as well as the negotiated landing areas, but you should anticipate a strengthening of the wind as you descend and set up to allow for the possibility of a negative ground speed when you touch down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Goms valley is wide, and the wind there is often brisk, but rarely excessive, and usually laminar.\u00a0 The main hazard is that on most flyable days there is likely to be an north-easterly flow in Oberwald and a south-westerly in Fiesch.\u00a0\u00a0The location of\u00a0the\u00a0region where these two breezes\u00a0collide will depend on general weather factors and the time of\u00a0day, and cannot be accurately predicted.\u00a0 If you encounter this zone, you may find convergence and\/or a\u00a0very variable\u00a0wind at ground level.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The valley breeze in the Urserntal will nearly always be coming from the east, and will almost certainly strengthen as you approach Andermatt.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the Surselva, you can also expect the valley breeze to be coming from the east, and although it may be quite gentle in Disentis, by the time you reach Chur, it is likely to be vigorous.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The effect of general meteo winds on the valley breezes is shown here:-<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2550 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Windmap-2017.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1615\" height=\"1122\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Windmap-2017.jpg 1615w, https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Windmap-2017-300x208.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Windmap-2017-768x534.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Windmap-2017-1024x711.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Windmap-2017-500x347.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1615px) 100vw, 1615px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">More landing zones to the east than to the west of Fiesch are covered in this section, because I have a strong preference for heading that way, and therefore land to the west so rarely that I have fewer helpful pictures of options in that direction.\u00a0 Details of those can be found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluggruppe-aletsch.ch\/flugmekka\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">local club website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In general, XC routes from Fiesch are well endowed with recognised landing fields, without stretches of unlandable terrain.\u00a0 It\u2019s only in a few areas \u2013 e.g. around the Furka pass and in the Saas valley \u2013 where finding a good &hellip;
