{"id":2985,"date":"2019-07-10T16:58:23","date_gmt":"2019-07-10T16:58:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/flyfiesch.co.nf\/?page_id=2985"},"modified":"2024-10-19T13:13:55","modified_gmt":"2024-10-19T13:13:55","slug":"altitude-limits","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/?page_id=2985","title":{"rendered":"Altitude limits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On several days in the summer, the height of cloudbase (or the tops of blue thermals) may well exceed 4,000m, but we must observe certain altitude limits in the Swiss Alps.\u00a0 Throughout \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/?page_id=106\">MIL ON<\/a>\u201d times, the restriction is a ceiling of FL130; during \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/?page_id=106\">MIL OFF<\/a>\u201d this rises to FL150.\u00a0 At standard QNH, these levels equate to roughly 3950m and 4550m ASL.<\/p>\n<p>However, the uncontrolled class G<span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"\" title=\"\"> airspace extends as a layer all over Switzerland from ground level to 600m AGL (with the exception of CTRs, which descend to the ground, and TMAs with lower limits, e.g. for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/?page_id=109\">Sion TMA<\/a> it\u2019s 300m AGL).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3211\" style=\"width: 860px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Luftraumbroschure-2020_class-G-snip.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3211\" class=\"wp-image-3211 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Luftraumbroschure-2020_class-G-snip.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"850\" height=\"343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Luftraumbroschure-2020_class-G-snip.jpg 850w, https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Luftraumbroschure-2020_class-G-snip-300x121.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Luftraumbroschure-2020_class-G-snip-768x310.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Luftraumbroschure-2020_class-G-snip-500x202.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3211\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Airspace categories<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"\" title=\"\">Consequently, we may exceed these altitude limits as long as we remain less than 600m directly above terrain, so (for example) even during \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/?page_id=106\">MIL ON<\/a>\u201d we are allowed to fly over the 4274m Finsteraarhorn provided that we remain within this class G layer.\u00a0 However, you would be in breach of air law if you went on a glide from there towards lower terrain, and were still over 3950m ASL when the ground directly underneath you had dropped away further than 600m.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/?page_id=1931\">Z\u00fcrich air lane<\/a>, the altitude limit never exceeds FL130, with no increased allowance during \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/?page_id=106\">MIL OFF<\/a>\u201d times.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On several days in the summer, the height of cloudbase (or the tops of blue thermals) may well exceed 4,000m, but we must observe certain altitude limits in the Swiss Alps.\u00a0 Throughout \u201cMIL ON\u201d times, the restriction is a ceiling &hellip;
