The peaks of the Eiger, M\u00f6nch and Jungfrau can be seen beyond this spectacular \u201criver of ice\u201d.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_323\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/1st-climb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-323\" class=\"wp-image-323\" src=\"https:\/\/flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/1st-climb-1024x813.jpg\" alt=\"Aletsch Glacier emerging from behind Eggishorn, leading towards the Eiger, M\u00f6nch, and Jungfrau\" width=\"800\" height=\"635\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/1st-climb-1024x813.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/1st-climb-300x238.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/1st-climb-500x397.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/1st-climb.jpg 1181w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-323\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aletsch Glacier emerging from behind Eggishorn, leading towards the Eiger, M\u00f6nch, and Jungfrau<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you\u2019re not interested in clocking up kilometres, it\u2019s usually quite easy to potter around in the area between take-off and the Riederhorn, about 8km to the south-west, enjoying the scenery.\u00a0 In normal conditions, you can expect to find plenty of thermals (and gliders marking them) unless you\u2019ve taken off very early.\u00a0 However, as there are no official landing fields for 12km between the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/?page_id=239\">Fiesch<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/?page_id=3135\">Bitsch<\/a> LZs, it\u2019s a good idea to maintain enough height so that you remain within range of one of these options without needing to rely on finding lift.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"st\">The track log below shows a route in normal conditions, in the early afternoon, with cloudbase at a little over 3000m.\u00a0 Despite the relatively low base, the visualisation and XContest details show how I am able to benefit from buoyant air along above the spine of the ridge and to pick up thermals generated on both sides of it; this is typical.\u00a0 The relevant section comes in the middle of a flight when I had returned to Fiescheralp from the Goms, intending to fly into the main Rh\u00f4ne valley, but I changed my mind and flew back again.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3457\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/2015-8-22-Riederhorn-and-back-high-level.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3457\" class=\"wp-image-3457\" src=\"https:\/\/flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/2015-8-22-Riederhorn-and-back-high-level.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"641\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/2015-8-22-Riederhorn-and-back-high-level.jpg 757w, https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/2015-8-22-Riederhorn-and-back-high-level-300x241.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/2015-8-22-Riederhorn-and-back-high-level-500x401.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3457\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Typical afternoon route from Heimat to the Riederhorn and back (click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportstracklive.com\/en\/track\/map\/XDrRob\/1\/fieschertal-wallis\/683969\/?mode=3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> for 3D visualisation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xcontest.org\/2015\/world\/en\/flights\/detail:XDrRob\/22.8.2015\/08:30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> for XContest details)<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the morning after a cold front or a storm due to overdevelopment the night before, cloudbase may well be below takeoff height at first, but rise swiftly as excess moisture in the air is soaked up and the temperature climbs. In these often very unstable conditions, a low-level trip to the Riederhorn and back amongst forming cloud can be a delight, and in the summer you may well find that by the time you return to Heimat, base has reached sufficient height for you to be comfortable to start the transition to the Goms. In the afternoon, this line often still works, but is much less reliable than the higher route shown above, and the thermals are likely to be drifting and torn in a south-westerly valley breeze coming from the main Rh\u00f4ne valley. The other important difference to note is that in the morning flight I pick up thermals from the east-facing side of the Riederhorn, but in the afternoon I use the west-facing flank (more because this is in the valley breeze than for its stronger solar heating).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In normal conditions, the direction in which the majority of XC flights start is to the east, into the Goms valley, as the more easterly aspect of the terrain there usually leads to it beginning to work well before the more southerly-facing slopes of the main Rh\u00f4ne valley to the west get going. I strongly recommend maximising height before starting the 5km glide across the Fieschertal towards the shoulder above Bellwald, the village on the corner of the ridge to the east of take-off. If you are no longer in lift (or at base) and have at least 2800m directly from takeoff, you can set off immediately, but most pilots head left along the slope for 1km to the north to Salzg\u00e4b, for a top-up in a second reliable house thermal, to shorten the transition and arrive with more height. This is a very obvious trigger point and easily identified by a large isolated barn in front of a spine, where the climb can be expected to release from the slope.\u00a0 When a low base prevents you from getting decent altitude but the air is very unstable &#8211; typical just after a cold front has passed through &#8211; you may be able to get away with starting your crossing with as little as 2,400m, but usually that would lead to a significant risk of bombing out at Bellwald.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3308\" style=\"width: 860px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Salzgab-2021-10-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3308\" class=\"wp-image-3308 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Salzgab-2021-10-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"850\" height=\"644\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Salzgab-2021-10-1.jpg 850w, https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Salzgab-2021-10-1-300x227.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Salzgab-2021-10-1-768x582.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Salzgab-2021-10-1-500x379.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3308\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Salzg\u00e4b thermal, 1km north of Heimat takeoff area<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If base is low or the thermals are poor, you can even head a further 1km north to reduce the length of the crossing. It is nearly always a mistake to allow yourself to be pressurised into leaving low because you have lost your thermal or been struggling to get good height. This is likely to lead to even more difficulty at Bellwald, because the thermals there are unlikely to be better or easier to find, and you will of course be several hundred metres lower than when you started your transition. I always look at the wind station reading there before I decide whether to set off or not; you should hope this shows a light flow from the south-east in the morning, as anything else can be disruptive. A north-easterly is particularly problematic, as it will produce a sinky headwind as you get near, so you will lose much more height than you may have anticipated.
