The less there is to see on the synoptic chart, the better!\u00a0 The pattern shown below is likely to bring hundreds of Swiss pilots to Fiesch in the summer, even on a weekday.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_91\" style=\"width: 1190px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/bracka20130816.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-91\" class=\"wp-image-91 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/bracka20130816.gif\" alt=\"Ideal synoptic pattern\" width=\"1180\" height=\"864\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-91\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ideal synoptic pattern<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To minimise the risk of experiencing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/?page_id=1967\">challenging conditions<\/a>, it&#8217;s best to choose days when the weather is as quiet as possible: light winds (best between south and west), minimal air pressure gradients (see <a href=\"https:\/\/profiwetter.ch\/index.php?show=wind_foehn_ch&amp;lang=de\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Profiwetter charts<\/a>), and a steady rather than ballistic lapse rate without significant inversions.\u00a0 Approaching cold fronts and troughs are particularly dangerous, because of the rapid unpredictable changes in wind strength and direction which they can cause in these big mountains.\u00a0 I once encountered a sudden 50 km\/hr ground level wind in the Goms, caused by a storm around Martigny, 100km to the west, which blasted a gust front from there all the way up the Rh\u00f4ne valley.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the summer, unless the weather is obviously unflyable, you can usually expect to find a few local pilots around at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flyfiesch.com\/?page_id=239\">main landing field<\/a> to help you to form an opinion about the day before committing yourself to the trip up the mountain to take-off. I have also always found the staff of both schools based in Fiesch to be exceptionally helpful towards visiting pilots asking for information about the conditions, and usually very forthcoming with advice.
