Foreign licences

According to information on the SHV website, pilots who are not resident in Switzerland are allowed to fly here if they hold a IPPI Card of level 4 or 5.  The relevant section of the FAI website states that level 5 is required to fly cross country.  All pilots must have third party insurance cover of at least CHF 1,000,000.  Documentation must be carried with you.

The SHV website also states that non-commercial occasional tandem flights are allowed, if you have a valid foreign tandem licence.

Foreign pilots may acquire a limited SHV membership to enable access to Swiss meteo and airspace information.

At the time of writing (April 2026) it has just come to my attention that the requirement for all aircaft in Switzerland (including paragliders and hang gliders) to display a number has recently started to be applied to non-residents.  This page on the SHV website has details (though not in English!) and the text “Identification markings on the glider are not compulsory” which used to appear on the Foreign Licence page has been removed.  I’m uncertain how likely it is that the lack of a number would lead to trouble and hoping that the situation will become clearer soon.
